DOROTHY HAMM MS PTSA UPDATE
Dear Families of Dorothy Hamm MS,
The parents on the Executive Committee are excited to announce that the Dorothy Hamm MS
PTSA was chartered at a meeting on February 19, 2019.
A PTSA – what is that, you may ask? A PTSA is a Parent, Teacher and Student Association. A
PTSA allows students a voice in their school and opportunities to help plan and organize PTSA-
sponsored events under the guidance of parents. Students in a PTSA can contribute to their
community in a positive way, and their involvement may help parents become more involved
too! Because DHMS is a brand-new middle school, the parents at the February 19 meeting
believed that forming a PTSA was important. We want the students to have a voice in building
our new DHMS community and in developing traditions and PTSA programs that will truly
benefit our students!
The following officers were elected to serve until the elections meeting in May for the 2019-20
school year:
DHMS PTSA President: Debbie Pearson (PresidentDHMSPTSA@gmail.com)
DHMS PTSA Treasurer: Dan Lyons (TreasurerDHMSPTSA@gmail.com)
DHMS PTSA Secretary: Dena Porter (adenaporter12@gmail.com)
VP Programs: Angela Huskey (angela@tinyelvis.com)
VP Community: Heidi Gibson (CommunityDHMS@gmail.com)
VP Communications: Lara Johnson (milesandlara@comcast.net)
There are many opportunities to become involved in our new DHMS PTSA!
1. Join the PTSA! You and your student are invited to join the DHMS PTSA! The PTSA will
be hosting several upcoming events where you can join the PTSA. Dues for parents
through June 30 are $10 each, staff members are $10 each, and students are $5 each. At
this time, we can accept only cash and check payments. Please contact President Debbie
Pearson at PresidentDHMSPTSA@gmail.com if you have any questions.
2. Engage at one of our upcoming “Creating Community” Chats! Please join us for a series
of casual brainstorming sessions and conversations about the type of community we
hope to build at DHMS. We are looking for ideas to bring people together and to make
the transition to DHMS not just tolerable, but amazing! Parents and future DHMS
students are welcome to attend. The first one will be held on Monday, March 11 at
7:00 pm at HB-Woodlawn (room TBA). Future dates include April 8 and May 9 (further
details TBD). Any questions? Please reach out to VP Community Heidi Gibson at
CommunityDHMS@gmail.com.
3. Attend one of our upcoming PTSA general membership meetings! The PTSA will have
three PTSA meetings this spring. We hope to see you there!! The dates are listed below:
Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 pm at HB-Woodlawn (room TBA)
Tuesday, April 23 at 7:00 pm at HB-Woodlawn (Library)
Tuesday, May 28 at 7:00 pm at HB-Woodlawn (Library)
4. Volunteer to help the PTSA! At the March PTSA meeting, we will continue
brainstorming ideas for our DHMS community, especially focusing on bringing our new
community together with events this spring and summer. We will need many volunteers
to help! Also, we will be discussing Committee Chair positions – which ones to have and
who might be interested in helping out!
5. Follow the DHMS PTSA on Facebook and Twitter! Until the PTSA can establish a
website and a weekly newsletter, we will be primarily using Facebook, Twitter and
School Talk messages like this one to send information to DHMS families about PTSA
events! Here are our social media links:
