October 1st

Just a reminder all Glebe Enrichment classes and the Theater rehearsals begin the week of October 1st.  Remind your kids what they are doing afterschool!

Glebe Nourishment Program

The Glebe Food Pantry operates on the goodwill of volunteers and your donation of food. All food donated to the pantry goes to Glebe families.  We are also collecting toiletries now!  In our experience, the following items are most needed:

  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Cooking oil
  • Bags of dried beans
  • Maseca flour for tortilla
  • Canned food or vegetables
  • Dried pasta
  • Jars of spaghetti sauce
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly or jam
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Boxes of macaroni and cheese
  • Gift cards to Safeway / Harris Teeter / Giant

The donations of items is ongoing – it is not a onetime collection. Please consider purchasing an extra item in your regular grocery shopping and donating it to the pantry.  Donations can be placed in the basket in the Glebe Lobby.

Questions, please contact Tara Blankinship or Beronica Salas

Upcoming Events September 19th – October 2nd:

Weekly News

Glebe’s Community Service Event

The new PTA Community Service Committee will kick off with a Family Stream Clean Up on Sunday, 9/24 from 3 – 5 pm at Bon Air Park (850 North Lexington St) near the rose garden. Enjoy an afternoon outside and help Arlington restore its natural spaces.  This is a great way to meet new families, visit with old friends and clean up our community.

  • Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to get dirty.
  • Bring rubber gloves
  • Wear your Glebe T-Shirt if possible
  • Trash bags will be provided.
  • This is a family event, so please don’t drop off your child.

Fall Movie & Potluck

We are looking for volunteers for our Fall Movie & Potluck event on October 20th!  To learn more about what the event is click here.

President’s Corner

I’ve mentioned a few times how awesome Glebe’s community is and I think it’s important to share how we give back. Did you know we have Glebe Nourishment (formerly known as Glebe Pantry) which stocks non-perishable food for our families in need? There is a cart in the front lobby you can drop off needed items (such as: bags of dried beans, mesa flour, canned fruit, oil, cereal, pasta). Those items are very much needed now. We also have a Food Bus which collects unused and unopened food at lunch time and redistributes it to families in need. Please encourage your kids to leave unopened and unused food on the “share table” at lunch. The collected food is distributed to families each Friday. Please see www.glebepta.org/give/glebe-cares for more information on this invaluable resource.

Quick reminders: Our first PTA meeting of the school year is 9/20 at 7 pm in the Glebe library. Free childcare is provided for all potty-trained kids.

Lastly, we’d love for you to join the PTA. Together we can do amazing things for our kids. www.glebepta.org/join.

As always, give me a call, email or just talk to me at Glebe if you have a question or suggestion!

Update from the Principal

The organization of our little parking lot can be confusing in the beginning of the year but overall, I have been very impressed with how quickly folks have learned the parking lot procedures!  I would like to ask parents/guardians/nannies to please not be on your cell phones while driving through the parking lot and to watch your speed, no one needs to be in a hurry in a school parking lot, it is too dangerous.

Morning Drop Off: Please plan to use the kiss and drop in the morning if you have to drive your child to school.  This is a very convenient procedure meant to eliminate the need for parking and designed for family convenience. Patrols are on Duty until 8:50 only.

Afternoon Pick Up: is meant to work the same as drop off, please drive up to the kiss and drop and your child will be released by a staff member to walk to your car.  Do not park your car in the kiss and drop and get out and look for your child, this causes major backups and is dangerous.

Church Parking Lot: is for parking only, it is not to be used as a “kiss and drop”.  Please only use the school entrance to access the parking lot, we have been asked to not use the side access road.

A lottery system is used to assign students to roles and placement will be made by September 23. Questions, contact ElaineMaag@gmail.com

Magnet for Membership

Designed by Glebe mom, Laura Harrington, we are pleased to offer a new car magnet! This year, when you join the PTA, you will automatically receive the magnet.

President’s Corner

We made it through the first week of school! It was great meeting new parents and seeing old friends at the Welcome Back Coffee!

It takes a village to make our PTA amazing (and it IS amazing!). These incredible parents took time out of their summer to help the school year start off with a bang! Over the summer, Ainsley Stapleton coordinated all of the School Kit supplies and Maureen Mellett made sure they were delivered to each class. Maureen Mellet and Sarah Goodell ordered t-shirts for our kindergartners. Cindy Scarcella, Alexis Johnson, Lauren Barber, Laurel Hanke, Sarah Goodell, Shireen Dodini, Holly Radus, Jill Yasin, Jessica Burke, Grace Ann Bourne, Missy Heinzer, Jaqueline Lotts, Christina Headrick, Jessica Buckwalter, Lisa Gumbs and Jeff Bogdanovich put together the first day packets given to each family on the first day of school.

Enrichment registration starts on Sunday, September 17, at 8 pm. Some classes will fill up very quickly, so be online and ready to hit refresh at 8 pm on the dot. The registration link will be posted here: www.glebepta.org/extras/after-school-enrichment. Payment will go to each vendor (usually by check on the first day of class). Over the weekend class offerings will be posted here: www.glebepta.org/extras/after-school-enrichment/enrichment-catalog/. Thanks to Sarah Smith, Jessica Burke, Beth Feldpush, Lynda Ramirez Blust, Joy Zaremba and Christina Caretti for making our afterschool enrichment inclusive, fun and exciting for our kids!

APS seeks input from Glebe parents in developing a plan for Reed Elementary students in the Westover neighborhood! If you’re willing to support APS with your ideas, guidance, and creativity, they need you on the Building Level Planning Committee (BLPC). If you are interested please contact APS Project Manager, Aji Robinson, at jibola.robinson@apsva.us.

Thanks for supporting the PTA and District Taco by coming to our 1st Glebe dining night. It was a fun night and tacos, burritos and quesadillas were enjoyed by all! As always, call, email or find me at Glebe if you have a question or suggestion!

Update from the Principal

We are off to a great start at Glebe.  As of today, we have 621 eager students filling our classrooms and our hearts.  I wanted to thank all of our families new and old for such a great start to the school year!

Tomorrow, September 13th, at 7 pm is Back to School night. We have two rounds of visits, so if you have 2 or more children you will need to decide the order in which you will visit classrooms. The first round will start at 7 pm, the second at 7:30. Specialists will be around if you would like to check in with them as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to stop by!

— Jamie and Ingrid
