Meet Glebe Elementary!
The Glebe Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a community of parents and educators working together to enhance the educational experience for all of our children. Glebe is located in Arlington, Virginia, and serves more than 600 students many years.
The Glebe PTA supports our schools’ mission to encourage active learning. This year holds many challenges, so we’ll be rethinking how to hold many of our traditional events and activities virtually, at least as the school year begins!
Glebe has sought to allow students to engage in hands-on activities in all curricular areas. Science features active engagement with the scientific method and with activities both indoors and in our outdoor classroom and gardens. In addition, this year, the school will add a “STEM” special class for all students during the week. Our exemplary project, the smART Project (science, math, art, and technology) combines science and math through hands-on engagement with a modern art form, visual art, dance, music, or theater. The interdisciplinary creativity of Glebe students is often on display in hallways, in art installations in the front of the school, and at student-created productions and musical presentations.
To offer more opportunities to students, ranging from computer coding to fencing, the PTA runs an after-school enrichment program and also funds scholarships so that all students can participate. To empower creative ideas, the PTA finances a grant program to fulfill the needs of specific proposals by Glebe’s teachers. The PTA has made major investments to upgrade classroom technology for teachers and students, who use iPads for tasks ranging from research to movie editing.
Glebe was the first school in the county to implement the Foreign Language in Elementary School initiative, developing Spanish classes for students several times a week, starting about 13 years ago. This initiative was ended by APS in 2020. Glebe celebrates an annual Multicultural Night and Soccer Fiesta. The PTA has supported student efforts to think internationally and to raise funds to build playgrounds in other countries.
The Glebe PTA organizes many events over the year that strengthen our sense of community, including showcases of student writing called “Rhyme and Cheese Nights,” Bingo Night, a fall Outdoor Movie and Potluck and more. A highlight every year is the annual Spring Auction and Social, which brings together hundreds of parents and school staff members for a night of fun (without the kids).
Fitness and wellness are important community values – many Glebe students participate in an organized sport – and both on the playground and in our physical education classes we live the value that everyone gets to play! The PTA runs an innovative “Be Your Body’s Friend Forever” (BFF) healthy living campaign, which rewards students who choose to walk, bike, or roll to school weekly. The PTA also sponsors Field Day and the Glebe 5K and fun run.
Please join the Glebe PTA, make a monetary donation or volunteer your time. Subscribe to our Newsletter, and visit us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. Our goal is to get as close to 100% participation as possible. We’d love to have your help and your ideas making Glebe an even better place for our kids.
Please stay tuned for more information about how we will revise some of the above opportunities for the 2020-21 school year.
