Odyssey After-School Workshops and Field Trips

FIRST, please .

Find out more about the Odyssey of the Mind teams at Glebe Elementary School on our information page.

Additional information may be posted as all our upcoming workshops are finalized.

  • Our two early Spontaneous “Try It” Workshops hosted more than 60 students. Tune in next year. Thanks for a fun start to the year!

Just a reminder – RSVP in advance for events so we are prepared for the numbers. We had 25 extra students at these first two events and it was pretty difficult to accommodate everyone last-minute, although we did it.

  • UpCycle Materials Workshop: Come visit the UpCycle Creative Reuse center in Alexandria and learn about all the kinds of materials your team can use to create their problem solution. Hands-on exploration! Get dozens of ideas to spark further creativity with recycled materials.
    • SUNDAY, November 10, 2-4 pm @ UpCycle, 1605 Cameron Street in Alexandria, Virginia. Registration is REQUIRED, and there is a small $5 cost to reserve the space.
    • Closed for registration. It was a great success today. Thanks to all who helped!!
  • Glebe Odyssey Tech Night: Come peek inside the new Central Library “Shop” makerspace, then find out about local resources and experiment with circuits, motors, code and STEM resources in the Bluemont Room. Make & Take: Everyone will be able to connect a motor to a battery and invent a tiny robot friend while there!
    • TUESDAY, December 3, 6-8 pm @ Arlington Public Library, 1015 N. Quincy St.
    • If you have any desire to enter “The Shop” makerspace for a quick look around that night, between 6:15-6:45 pm, you should go ahead and fill out the “The Shop” maker agreement in advance.
    • Please RSVP via the Sign-up if you are interested in attending. This event is geared to 3rd-6th Grade, but younger kids are welcome to attend with parents who are also interested in learning.
    • PLEASE BRING: One laptop per team who wants to try some of the technology, and one old toothbrush per student who wants to build the tiny robot.
  • Balsa Basics – a NOVA East Odyssey Training Workshop: Come “take a break” with other Odyssey of the Mind teams and learn about structural engineering through hands-on activities. All students on balsa teams, and those who would consider this problem in the future, are invited. Structural engineering knowledge certainly also applies to solving Spontaneous problems! Today is for ages 3rd Grade and up, and we are bringing in a longtime balsa coach, problem captain, and engineer to help teach the class. Don’t miss this opportunity at our school!
    • SUNDAY, December 8, 1-3 pm @ Glebe Elementary Multipurpose Room
    • REQUIRED SIGN-UP & PAYMENT ($7.50 per participant):
    • PLEASE BRING: a notebook to use for your observations and a can of vegetables.
  • Pizza and Problem Nights: Come have fun at these nights of Spontaneous Problem-Solving and Community (with pizza for dinner) for Glebe OMers and Alumni. Primarily for 3rd grade and up but all are invited. (Little kids/siblings must have a parent to help them.)

The Sign-ups for events sponsored mainly for Glebe Odyssey students are below. Please note Balsa has a SEPARATE sign-up, since NOVA East is working with us to put together this learning opportunity for students from other local schools to participate in that one, in addition to Glebe kids.
